WEEK 5

SHOULD I NOT LOVE THAT GREAT CITY?

Jonah 4

Jonah 4 concludes the story of Jonah with a profound lesson on God’s compassion and our struggle with God’s mercy and grace. After Nineveh’s massive revival and repentance, Jonah becomes exceedingly angry. He expresses his displeasure to God, revealing his frustration with God’s mercy towards Nineveh. God uses a plant, a worm, and a scorching wind to teach Jonah about compassion and priorities. The book ends with God questioning Jonah, “Should I not pity Nineveh, that great city?” This chapter challenges us to examine our hearts and attitudes towards those we consider “undeserving” of God’s grace.

WEEK 4

GOD OF THE SECOND CHANCE

Jonah 3

Jonah 3 demonstrates God’s incredible mercy and the power of second chances. After Jonah’s initial disobedience, God calls him again to go to Nineveh and proclaim His message. This time, Jonah obeys and delivers a brief yet powerful message of impending judgment. Remarkably, the entire city, from the king to the ordinary people, repents in response to Jonah’s warning. God sees their genuine repentance and relents from bringing the destruction He had threatened. This chapter showcases God’s desire for all to be saved, His readiness to forgive, and His sovereignty in accomplishing His mission through imperfect messengers.

WEEK 3

THE GRACE OF GOD

Jonah 2

Jonah 2 provides a powerful account of Jonah’s prayer from the belly of the great fish. After attempting to flee from God’s command and being thrown into the sea, Jonah finds himself in a place of utter desperation. It is here, in the depths, that he cries out to God. Jonah’s prayer is a heartfelt plea for deliverance and a profound acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty and grace. God hears Jonah’s cry and commands the fish to vomit Jonah onto dry land, demonstrating His incredible mercy and power to save.

WEEK 2

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD

Jonah 1

God has always been about forming a people (the Church) who he will reveal his glory to and then reveal his glory through that people to the world. The book of Jonah tunes us into the mission of God. What is the mission of God? It is the glory of God in all the earth.

WEEK 1

THE PRODIGAL PROPHET

Jonah 1:1-3

The Book of Jonah tells the story of one of God’s messengers who refused to obey God. It’s an interesting book. Most of the books in the Bible focus on God’s message to a group of people. This is the only book that explicitly focuses on God’s messenger.
